These gothic lace DIY Halloween mason jar candle holders are pretty enough for an elegant Halloween dinner table, and spooky enough for an over-the-top Halloween party. The perfect ghostly accessory!
I love making Halloween DIY projects for my annual Halloween party.
Usually I’m looking for ideas that are a little glam as well as spooky like these Halloween decanter labels and this silver leaf skull.
So these gothic lace DIY Halloween mason jar candle holders fit right in!
They’re fast and easy to make, and they look awesome on pretty much any Halloween tablescape.
Materials and Tools
You’ll need these materials for all versions of the candle holders:
- Small mason jars, or any other glass jars you have hanging around.
- Repositionable adhesive*. Using the repositionable adhesive makes it easier to get the lace on straight.
- 5″ to 6″ wide black lace*
- Necklace pendant* or brooch. I bought the pendants for my project but if you have an old one that you’re not using any more, that would work, too. For the first version of the candle holder, you can also use a pin.

These are only required if you are making the first version:
- 2″ wide wired ribbon. I bought mine at Costco. They sell all kinds of great ribbon for Christmas.
- Velcro dots*
- Clear Gorilla glue*
- Stapler
- Tin snips or wire cutters
- Small clamp. I find these ratchet clamps* are the easiest ones to work with.
Step 1: Stick The Black Lace To The Jar
The first step to creating either version of the DIY Halloween candle holders is to attach the lace to the mason jar.
To do this, spray the outside of the mason jar with repositionable adhesive*. Because it is repositionable, it will allow you to move the lace around if you don’t get it on quite right the first time.
Then wrap the lace around the jar, lining up the top of the jar with the top of the lace.
If the lace is a little long for the jar (like mine was), tuck the bottom ends under the bottom of the jar.
Cut off the lace where it meets the front edge on the back of the jar.
Steps to complete version 1
The first version of these Halloween mason jar candle holders is a little simpler than the second, as you can probably tell from the supplies list.
To start, cut the rhinestone mesh* so that it is only 2 stones wide and long enough to wrap around the top of the jar.
Then thread it through the ring on the top of the pendant like you would with a necklace chain. Move the pendant along the ribbon until it is in the middle.
If the pendant ring is small, try folding the mesh in half lengthwise before threading it through.
Wrap the rhinestone mesh around the top of the mason jar so that the pendant is on the front of the jar. The ends of the rhinestone mesh should end up on the same side of the jar where the lace ends are meeting up.
Use a glue gun to attach the ends of the rhinestone mesh to the jar.
How to complete Halloween candle holder version 2
For the second version of these Halloween mason jar candle holders, I wrapped 2″ wired ribbon around the jar and glued the pendant to the front.
Wrap The Ribbon Around The Jar
To do this, cut the ribbon so that it wraps completely around the jar with about an inch overlap.
Then use my favorite method for sticking the ends together – velcro dots*.
Stick one half of each dot to either end of the ribbon.
And test it to make sure they are in the right place. The sticky sides need to meet so that the ribbon is tight around the jar.
Stapling the dots to the ribbon keeps them from falling off or moving.
Wrap the ribbon around the jar with the ends meeting at the back (the same side where the ends of the lace are meeting up.)
Pull the ribbon tight so it’s not going to slide down and attach with the velcro.
Cut off any excess ribbon.
Glue On The Pendant
Before you glue the pendant on to the front of the jar, remove the ring that the chain would normally go through.
I used tin snips to do this. But wire cutters would also work.
If you are using a pin instead of a pendant, use the snips to cut the post off the back.
You’ll want to get it as flat as possible. So if it is glued on, you might want to try using pliers to peel it off the back.
Lay the mason jar down so that the back (where the ribbon ends join) is faced down.
Spread clear gorilla glue* on the back surface of the pendant and stick it to the front of the jar so that it’s centered on the ribbon.
Technically, you can use any kind of glue that works with metal and glass, but (as the name suggests) the clear gorilla glue dries clear.
So if you put too much on (as I usually do), you won’t see it when it dries.
Then use a clamp to hold the pendant on the jar until the glue dries (which will take a couple of hours).
The Finished DIY Halloween Candle Holders
Add a candle and you are done!
These rechargeable flameless candles* are my favorites! They last for about 3 days of continuous use and there’s no batteries required.
I love the finished look of these Halloween candle holders.
They have a gothic vibe and are very versatile!
I have used them in my Halloween party decorations every year since I made them.
And they seem to fit right in, no matter the theme.

Since they really aren’t specific to Halloween, these gothic candle holders would also work well for other events using dark color schemes like a Phantom of the Opera party or a Great Gatsby party.

How is the pendant attached to the rhinestone ribbon?
Hi Teri…I hung the pendant on the ribbon like you would if you were putting it on a necklace. But gluing it on would also work.
