If you want some 4th of July party ideas, this list will help with food, drinks, desserts and decorations…everything you need for the ultimate Independence Day celebration!

Independence Day is a great holiday for taking advantage of the summer weather and getting together with friends.
And I do take full advantage…by hosting a 4th of July party every year!
When you have a party for the same group of people on the same holiday every year, it can be a challenge to come up with new ideas to keep the party interesting.
So every year, I’m on the hunt for new 4th of July party ideas, and I thought I would share some of them here.
1 | Create a patriotic backdrop

To make my 4th of July party feel special, I like to decorate my outdoor spaces as if they were indoors.
So I put out a console table (this one is meant to be outdoors) with some outdoor artwork and a pretty planter.
Then add some red, white and blue decorations like the wreath and candles to create a patriotic vibe while keeping an elegant look.
2 | Plant red, white and blue Planters

Planting containers with red, white and blue flowers is a great way to add a natural element to your 4th of July party.
If you put them in separate planters, you can group them together as patriotic decor for your party.
And then move them apart later if you don’t want to have the red, white and blue look all summer.
For ideas on what plants to use, read patriotic flower pot combinations.
3 | Hang tea light candles

One of my favorite patriotic decorations for the garden are these hanging tea light candles.
I put red*, white* and blue flameless tealights* in these round candle holders* (the plastic ones are best for outside).
And then hang them from the tree branches around my deck and patio.
It makes the garden look so magical when it starts to get dark!
4 | Make DIY red, white and blue candles

You may have noticed that I use a lot of candles for my Independence Day parties.
And these DIY red, white and blue candle holders are one of my favorites.
They are really easy to make and can be used either inside or outside.
Although you may want to keep them in a protected spot if it looks like it is going to rain. Otherwise, you could have colored rice everywhere!
For more patriotic candle ideas, see our list of red, white and blue candle holders.
5 | Put up flags

For less DIY work, hanging flags is a really easy way to add red, white and blue decor without much work.

I like to stick smaller ones in planters and vases as well as hanging them.
The repetition really makes the flags stand out.
6 | Hang patriotic paper fans

Since almost all of my 4th of July parties are outdoor, I usually focus on decorations that can be used outside, and won’t get wrecked in the rain.
Given that, I would only use paper decorations like these red, white and blue fans* indoors or in a covered location like your front porch or under a gazebo.
But they are pretty and very easy to put up.
7 | Paint lawn stars

However, these painted lawn decorations will survive a downpour.
Which makes them perfect outdoor 4th of July party decorations!

8 | Host a cookout

One thing that is pretty consistent, I almost always have a cookout, or a bar-b-q as we used to call it when I lived in Toronto.
(Now that I live in South Carolina, bar-b-q is a way of cooking, not an event. So to keep everyone from getting confused, I call it a cookout now.)
In either case, it’s the perfect way to have a casual get together for friends and family of all ages.
I usually start late in the afternoon, and do a dinner meal.
Partly because it’s really hot in the middle of the day in July (especially here in South Carolina).
And partly because people will stay to watch fireworks if they don’t have to wait too long.
If you need help with recipes, read the list of my favorite 4th of July cookout recipes.
9 | Or do brunch instead

Another one of my favorite 4th of July party ideas is to host an early afternoon brunch.
I have done this a couple of times, and some of my friends like it better than the evening event.
Since most people have to work the next day, a brunch makes sure the party winds down early enough for everyone to get home at a decent hour.
It’s also a great option if you don’t want to take on the responsibility for lighting fireworks. Everyone will have gone home by the time it gets dark!
If you haven’t done this before, read my tips on hosting a stress-free brunch.
10 | Make a red, white and blue salad

This feta and watermelon salad with blueberries is super refreshing for a hot day.
And the red, white and blue colors fit right in with the patriotic decor.
11 | Use American flag toothpicks

If you’re not making red, white and blue food, but want it to look like it belongs at your 4th of July party, just add some American flag toothpicks*.
It’s an inexpensive and easy way to add some patriotic flair to your food.
12 | Make grab & go utensil mugs

To make distributing napkins, cups and cutlery easier, I like to put them all together in mason jar mug.
Then everyone can grab one and have all the tableware they need for your cookout.
If you wanted to take it one step further, you could add little packets of ketchup, mustard and relish for one-stop condiments.
Putting it all out on an American Flag serving tray* adds to the patriotic decor and makes it easy for you to transport everything outside.
Glasses with a chalkboard sign make sure that everyone remembers which one is theirs.

Or if you are having a sit-down dinner, you could write the names on ahead of time and use the mugs as place cards.
13 | Make a patriotic charcuterie board

Charcuterie boards are a great way to make share-able things easy to access for a crowd.
And give everyone a chance to pick and choose what they like.
They’re also super easy to customize to your event and your tastes.
I like to do this red, white and blue charcuterie board as an appetizer for my 4th of July party.
It’s got cheese, meat and fruit on it (something for everyone), and goes with the patriotic decor perfectly.
This burger toppings charcuterie board comes in handy if you’re serving burgers. And this fresh fruit charcuterie board is great for a healthy dessert option.
14 | Put red and white roses in a blue vase

I love using flowers for party decor. But they can get pretty expensive.
So I usually opt for simple arrangements that make a big impact.
And this one that uses red and white roses in a blue and white ginger jar is perfect for a 4th of July party.

Or if you want to have red, white and blue flowers, adding in some blue hydrangeas works well, too.

15 | Put out some 4th of July gnomes

Do you like holiday gnomes as much as I do?
I think they are so stinking cute that I have to put out a few of them for every holiday.
And the 4th of July is no different.
I usually stick them in unexpected places, like among the candles on my fireplace mantel. So they add some color and are a bit of a surprise.
16 | Serve Patriotic Desserts

Of course, you can’t have a 4th of July celebration without a patriotic dessert!
Desserts are a great way to add red, white and blue to your food table.
These patriotic cakesicles are look great and are easy to serve to a crowd (no cake cutting required!)

Or if you’re looking for something to cool you down, these homemade red, white and blue popsicles are another great option.
Obviously, these ones can’t be put out on the table for very long, but they taste great and are made with real fruit. So they are not as fattening as the cake version.
For more ideas, here’s my list of patriotic desserts. Although some of them are a little more labor intensive than others, they can all be done ahead of time. So they won’t add to your day-of-the-party tasks.
17 | Make Summery Drinks

I’m also a big fan of Sangria in the summer. What’s more refreshing than wine with berries?
This recipe for berries and lime sangria uses a rose wine which makes it perfect for a hot summer evening.
But there are all kinds of options for summer sangria recipes you can try.

Mojitos are another refreshing option for summer. There’s something about mixing mint with your drink that makes them taste really refreshing.
For the 4th of July, my 2 favorite recipes are strawberry mojitos and blueberry mojitos. They’re both made with fresh fruit, and the red and blue colors go with the theme.

Homemade lemonade is pretty much the perfect option for kids and anyone else who doesn’t want an alcoholic beverage.
And it also works well as a mixer with vodka (or other liquors) to make alcoholic lemonade drinks if you are so inclined.
Whichever drink you go with, it’s helpful to mix enough in advance that you don’t have to keep making drinks all afternoon.

Even better? Use a beverage dispenser*. That way it’s really easy for people to help themselves…and you won’t get any flies helping themselves to your cocktail!

18 | Or 4th of July jello shots

Jello shots are always one of my go-to party cocktails. Okay, they’re not really a cocktail but you know what I mean.
Everyone loves them and you can make them in whatever color or flavor you like.
If you want to make them with patriotic colors, try out these red, white and blue jello shots.

Or for a summery version that tastes just like the real drink, these Pina Colada jello shots always go over really well at my parties.
For more ideas, read my list of summer Jello shot recipes.
That’s the run down of my 4th of July party ideas at the moment (I will add to them as I come up with new ones). Hopefully, you’ve found some inspiration for your own Independence Day party.
