Why I love this Halloween mummy dogs recipe

If you’re looking for a Halloween appetizer that’s fun without being complicated, these Halloween mummy dogs are an easy choice.

They’re made with just a few everyday ingredients, they’re quick to put together, and they’re easy to serve. That’s exactly the kind of recipe I want when I’m making food for a party.

Even though they’re simple, they still add something fun to your Halloween table.

Wrapping the hot dogs in crescent roll dough and adding a pair of edible eyes is all it takes to turn regular wieners into a festive appetizer that fits right in with the rest of your Halloween food.

Halloween mummy dogs ingredients - crescent roll dough, hot dog weiners and candy eye balls

Here is your shopping list (for 8 mummy dogs):

  • Refrigerated Dough – 8-ounce can refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • Refrigerated Meats – 8 hot dog wieners
  • Candy – 20 edible eyeballs*
  • Condiments – a few drops of ketchup or mustard (to act as glue for the eyeballs)

Substitutions & Additions

  • If you have an Air Fryer and want to speed up the cooking time a little, you can cook them for 7 to 9 minutes at 350°F.
  • You can also swap the standard hot dogs for mini smoked sausages or cocktail sausages if you want a bite-sized appetizer.

How to make Halloween mummy dogs

  • 1 | Prep work

Start by turning your oven on to 350°F so it gets nice and hot while you prep.

Crest roll dough cut into strips

Open your package of crescent roll dough and gently pull the pieces apart into separate triangles.

If the dough feels too sticky, try dusting your fingers or the counter with a tiny bit of flour.

Use a knife or pizza cutter to carefully cut each triangle into thin ribbons that are about ¼ inch wide.

Don’t worry about being perfect. Even slightly uneven strips will look great once they are wrapped.

  • 2 | Prepare the weiners

Wrap three or four of your dough strips around each hot dog, crisscrossing them like mummy bandages until the hot dog is mostly covered.

4 weiners wrapped in crescent roll dough on a baking sheet

Set your wrapped mummies onto a baking sheet, making sure there is a little room between each one.

Giving them space prevents them from sticking together while the dough puffs up in the oven.

  • 3 | Bake

Bake them in the oven for 12 to 15 minutes until the dough turns a lovely golden brown color.

Take the tray out of the oven and let them sit for a couple of minutes to cool down slightly.

  • 4 | Add the eyes

Close up of a Halloween mummy dog on top of a stack of them

Dab two tiny dots of ketchup or mustard near one end of the hot dog to act as glue.

Then press the edible eyeballs onto them.

  • 5 | Serve

Serve your fun mummy dogs right away with bowls of ketchup or mustard on the side for dipping.

These are best enjoyed while they are still warm and the dough is soft.

How to make ahead

To make these in advance, wrap the dough around the hot dogs up to 4 hours before you plan to bake them.

Keep them covered in the fridge, then just pop them in the oven when you’re ready to serve.

Storage

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

When you want to eat them again, re-heat them in the oven or toaster oven for a few minutes to get them warm again.

I don’t recommend heating them in the microwave because it tends to make the crescent dough rubbery.
