Why I love this Halloween guacamole recipe

This spider web Halloween guacamole is one of my go-to Halloween party appetizers!

It’s super easy to whip up, which is perfect when you’re busy getting everything ready for a spooky celebration.

Plus, it’s great for adding that extra touch of Halloween spirit to the table.

Everyone always gets a kick out of how cute and festive it is, but honestly, it’s just as delicious as it is spooky.

Halloween guacamole ingredients - avocado, cilantro, jalapeno pepper, salt, garlic, cumin, onion, limes, chipotle, sour cream and olives

Here is your shopping list (for 8 servings):

  • Fresh produce – 4 large ripe avocados, 2 limes, ½ white or red onion, ½ cup cilantro, 1 jalapeno, 3 cloves of garlic.
  • Spices – ½ teaspoon cumin, ½ teaspoon chipotle pepper.
  • Seasoning – ½ teaspoon sea salt + more to taste
  • Dairy – ¼ cup sour cream
  • Canned goods – 2 black or kalamata olives

How to make Halloween guacamole

  • 1 | Prep work

Chopped onions, cilantro, jalapeno peppers, limes, avocado and minced garlic on a cutting board with a chefs knife

Peel and remove the pit from the avocado.

To do this easily, cut the avocado in half lengthwise around the pit and twist to open. Use a spoon to scoop out the stone.

Chop the onion into small, fine pieces. A small food processor is the easiest way to do this.

    Finely chop the cilantro.

Mince the garlic. Using a garlic press makes this super easy.

    Chop the jalapeno pepper.

Wear gloves if you’re sensitive to spice, and remove the seeds if you want a milder flavor.

  • 2 | Make the dip

Halloween guacamole ingredients in a bowl

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, mash the avocado with a fork.

Combine your chopped veggies with the mashed avocado.

Add in the squeezed lime juice, spices, and salt.

Mix with the fork again until everything is well combined.

Mashing the guacamole with a fork makes a chunky dip. If you prefer a smoother one, you can mix all of the ingredients in a food processor instead.

Give your guacamole a taste and add more salt if needed. (Remember, it will taste even better after chilling for a bit).

    Pro tip:

While not absolutely necessary, letting the guacamole sit for an hour or two allows the flavors to blend. To do this, cover it with plastic wrap (pushed down so that it is touching the surface of the dip) and store in the refrigerator. Add the decorations as follows when you are ready to serve.
  • 3 | Decorate

Place the sour cream in a piping bag with a small round piping tip.

If you don’t have one, you can use a plastic sandwich bag with the tip cut off of one corner.

Squeeze gently to pipe the sour cream onto the guacamole in a spider web pattern.

    To do this:

    • Start by drawing 2 perpendicular lines across the top of the guacamole.
    • Then draw 2 more lines through the middle of the first two.
    • Then draw in the spider web by connecting the lines at 3 different points along the lines.

Cut two olives in half. Leave one of the halves whole for the spider’s body. Slice the other half into 8 strips to make the legs.

Arrange the olives on the guacamole so it looks like a spider.

Place the whole olive in the center for the body, then position the strips around it to resemble legs.

Serve with blue corn tortilla chips for an extra spooky touch!

The chips are a dark and spooky color that makes your Halloween guacamole even more fun and festive.

How to make ahead

A bowl of Halloween guacamole on a table with blue corn chips

To make the guacamole ahead of time, prepare it up to the point of piping on the sour cream.

Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to minimize air contact. This will help to prevent the avocado from turning brown.

Store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before serving.

Add the sour cream spider web and olive spider just before serving to keep the presentation fresh and the toppings looking their best.

Always keep the chips in a sealed bag until ready to serve to prevent them from going stale.

Storage

To store leftovers, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to prevent air exposure and browning.

Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 to 2 days for the best freshness.

When ready to serve again, give it a stir to reincorporate any separation or browning.

If the guacamole has turned slightly brown on top, you can also scrape off the surface and use the fresher layer underneath.
