Why I love this dark Halloween fruit salad recipe
This dark Halloween fruit salad is one of those recipes that looks a little more interesting than a regular bowl of mixed fruit, without requiring any extra work.
The combination of blackberries, blueberries, dark cherries, and black grapes gives it a deep, almost-black color that’s perfect for Halloween parties, gothic-themed dinners or any occasion where you want the food to fit a darker color scheme.
And since the dark color comes entirely from the fruit, there’s no food coloring or special ingredients involved.
This dark fruit salad is fresh, naturally sweet and easy to make ahead, which makes it a nice lighter option to add to a party table full of heavier appetizers and desserts.
Ingredients

Here is your shopping list (for 12 servings):
This recipe consists entirely of fresh fruit found in the produce aisle. The amounts are what I usually use but you can vary them to fit what you like:
- 12-ounce package blackberries
- 12-ounce package blueberries
- 1 pound cherries
- 1 pound black grapes – Try to get the blackest ones you can find (many look more red than black)
Substitutions & Additions
- You can also add dark plums. But they have to be cut into smaller pieces so I avoid them because they add more work 🙂
- I don’t think fresh fruit needs a dressing, but you can drizzle some honey and squeeze half a lime over it if you want to add something a little extra.
How to make a dark fruit salad recipe
1 | Prep work
Wash all of the fruit thoroughly.
Start by pulling the stems off your cherries. Then use a cherry pitter to push the pits out of the centers. (It’s much easier to do than it sounds like it would be!)
Pitting the cherries can create some red spatter. So do this somewhere that is easy to clean.
Pull each grape off its stem and set them aside for your fruit mix.
Look closely at your blueberries and pick off any tiny green stems you might find still attached.
Don’t use any fruit that is too soft or mushy. It’s amazing how fast it goes bad after it gets to this stage and you don’t want to serve rotten fruit in your salad.2 | Assemble the salad
Begin building your fruit salad by placing the cherries and grapes in the bowl first.
Then add the blueberries and blackberries.
The larger and heavier fruit (cherries and grapes) should go in first to prevent squishing the smaller and lighter fruit (blueberries and blackberries).
I separate the fruit into separate sections that each take up one quarter of the bowl, with the cherries and grapes across from each other. Since they both have more of a reddish color, they look more balanced on opposite sides of the bowl.
You can also mix the fruit like a tossed salad but be careful not to squish the blackberries.3 | Chill
Keep your finished fruit salad in the refrigerator so it stays nice and cool until you are ready to share it.
I like to take the fruit out of the refrigerator a few minutes before serving so it can warm up a little. I think it tastes better when it isn’t freezing cold.
How to make ahead
You can put this salad together a day or two in advance and store it in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
For the best results, make sure the fruit is very fresh so that it doesn’t go soft.
If you plan to toss the salad, don’t do it until just before serving. Otherwise, the blackberries and blueberries at the bottom may get squished.
Variations
To make the salad look a little more specific to Halloween, use a ghost cookie cutter to cut shapes out of slices of cheese (I use Havarti).
Then arrange them around the top of the salad.
Or add white Mozzarella pearls to make it into a black and white salad that’s perfect for a Black and White themed party.
You could eliminate the cherries if you want the rest of the salad to look darker.
For my Beetlejuice party, I used the black and white version and added some green grapes so it matched the black, white and green color scheme.
