From a spooky forest entrance to illuminated jail cells, create an immersive experience that brings Batman and Robin face-to-face with their most notorious foes.

Every year I host a themed Halloween party and decorate my yard to go with the theme.
So for my Batman party, I decided to use Arkham Asylum as the inspiration for my outdoor Halloween decorations.
It’s a spooky, creepy place so it’s easy to create a dark, atmospheric yard haunt that’s perfect for Halloween.
Then add Batman and Robin as well as some villains with dressed-up skeletons.
And lots of lighting to create the ambiance.
Both my party guests and the neighborhood trick-or-treaters loved it!
More themed outdoor Halloween decorations
1 | The yard entrance
The yard entrance always sets the stage for an unforgettable Halloween experience.
So I like to use an arbor to make it obvious where to come in.
And I was actually able to find one with a bat on it. Which goes perfectly with the batman theme.
I also like that it has gates.
I can keep them closed before Halloween (when I don’t really want people walking across my front yard). And open them up when it’s time for the trick-or-treaters to come through.
But since it’s black, you could hardly see it at night.
So I wrapped some string lights around it and added a flood light pointing down from the top to make the sign stand out more.
2 | The fence
I think having a fence around your yard is a must-have for any Halloween outdoor setup.
It not only adds to the spooky decor but also ensures safety by preventing people from walking through your carefully placed decorations and tripping over wires.
For the front of the yard, I used this metal Halloween fence* which goes very well with the arbor. But it is pretty expensive.
So to keep costs down, I put up a cheap and easy PVC pipe and chain fence on the sides and walkway.
It is very easy to put together and still fits in with the Halloween vibe.
And the hole in the pipe is just big enough to hold one of these solar lights that look like flame torches.
They add to the decor and provide some light so people can see where they are walking.
3 | The spooky forest
I wanted to transform the front part of the yard into a spooky forest that you had to walk through to get to Arkham Asylum.
So I bought a few of these lighted spooky trees* and put them up on either side of the walkway.
They look really cool at night with the lights on.
4 | The bat signal
Of course, you can’t have a Batman theme without a bat signal.
So I was really happy when I was able to find this spot light* that would display it.
And it was big and bright enough for the bat silhouette to show up on the side of the house.
You can see it from all the way down the street.
5 | Batman and Robin
Batman and Robin are another must-have element in this Halloween outdoor decor setup.
So I dressed up a couple of skeletons as the iconic duo. (You can find the costumes here* and here*).
Then put them in this batmobile*, that is actually a toddler’s bed. It is made of plastic so it worked well outside.
If I had more time, I would have spray painted the grass underneath with black paint to enhance the overall look. You can get this paint* that is specifically made for grass so it won’t kill your lawn.
To make sure you could see them at night, I put one of these flood lights* inside the car at the front.
Which also resulted in the batman shadow on the garage. Totally unintended but pretty cool!
6 | Arkham asylum
I brought Arkham Asylum to life in my yard by building a “brick” facade using this brick scene setter*.
I re-used these DIY cemetery pillars that I made a few years ago for the ends.
And filled in the middle sections with pieces of plywood wrapped in the scene setter.
The entrance is an arbor that’s always in the garden, but an inexpensive one works just as well if you don’t have one.
To complete the look, I hung this Arkham Asylum sign* from the top of the arbor with a flood light pointing down on it so it’s visible at night.
7 | The asylum guards
For the guards, I used another couple of skeletons and dressed them up in these police costumes*.
(I have to say, these costumes are pretty cool. They came with everything you need including the handcuffs and the sunglasses.)
Then sat them at a table just inside the Arkham Asylum walls.
And added these fake donuts* and skeleton coffee mugs* to add a little humor to the scene.
A solar lantern on the table makes sure you can see the scene at night.
8 | The jail cells
Then I added jail cells by putting up bars on both sides of the walkway inside the Arkham Asylum.
To make the bars, I used half-inch PVC pipe spaced about 6 inches apart and 3-way connectors to connect them.
Then put them up by hammering garden stakes into the ground at both ends of each section.
And putting the PVC over the top (like I do for the fence).
Originally, I was going to paint them black but decided against it because they wouldn’t show up at night.
When you come through the arbor at night, it almost feels like you are walking into a jail.
9 | The villains
Of course, Batman wouldn’t be Batman without the villains.
So I dressed one skeleton up as The Joker (using this costume*).
One as the Riddler (using this costume*).
And one as Harley Quinn (using this costume* and this foam bat*).
Then made sure they had flood lights pointed at them so you could see them behind the bars in the dark.
10 | The bats
A batman theme wouldn’t be complete without some bats.
So I hung quite a few of them from tree branches.
As well as put up this large lighted one* in the yard. You can’t tell from the picture, but the lights on the wings alternate so it looks like it’s flying.
11 | Lighting
As with all Halloween outdoor displays, lighting is key to making your Batman Arkham Asylum Halloween decor truly shine.
Using lots of flood lights ensures that all the characters are visible even after dark, creating a dramatic and eerie effect.
I like these ones* because you can change the color for them. That way they are easier to re-use.
Outlining trees with string lights makes them part of the display. And the outline looks kind of spooky.
I put up these LED string lights* that you can change the colors on.
Then leave them up all year round, using the appropriate colors for the season. That way I don’t have to keep putting them up and taking them down!
I love using these solar lanterns because you don’t have to worry about plugging them in. (You can find the headless statue here*.)
So you can put them pretty much anywhere. (Although they do need to get a decent amount of sun during the day to work well).
Then added some other lighted props.
Like pumpkins.
Some lighted candle path lights.
And these tombstones with lighted candles*.
