Why I love these Moscow Mule Jello shots

If a Moscow Mule is your go-to cocktail, you’re going to love these Moscow Mule Jello Shots.

They’re made with lime Jello, vodka, and ginger beer, so they taste just like the original cocktail.

Which makes them perfect for everything from game days to summer cookouts to holiday parties.

I like to garnish each one with a lime wedge and a sprig of fresh mint just before serving to give them that traditional Moscow Mule look.

And since you can make them ahead of time, they’re one less thing you have to worry about once your guests arrive.

Here is your shopping list (for 12 Jello shots):

  • Jello – 1 small (3-ounce) box Box Lime Jello
  • Soda – 1 cup Ginger Beer
  • alcohol – ½ cup Vodka
  • fresh produce – (optional for garnish) – Fresh mint sprigs, 1 lime

Substitutions & Additions

  • For stronger Jello shots, use ¾ cup ginger beer and ¾ cup vodka.

How to make Moscow mule Jello shots

A round tray holding green Jello shots in plastic cups, each garnished with a lime wedge and mint leaves; whole and halved limes and a green towel are nearby.
  • 1 | Prep work

A round white tray holds twelve empty Jello shot cups, surrounded by lime wedges, mint leaves, a green-striped towel, and a box of Jello.

Spread 12 to 15 Jello shot cups out on a baking sheet or tray. While this isn’t absolutely necessary, it does make it much easier to move them to the fridge without spilling.

Then boil enough water in a kettle or pot to get ½ cup. (You’ll need to start with more than that because some of it will evaporate will it is heating).

  • 2 | Make the Jello mixture

A white spatula rests in a glass bowl containing lime Jello.

Start by pouring the lime jello mix into a medium-sized bowl and adding the boiling water.

Then stir for one to two minutes until the powder is fully dissolved and the liquid looks clear.

Use a clear glass bowl so you can easily see if there are any sugary clumps left at the bottom before you add the cold liquids.

A hand pours ginger beer from a can into a glass bowl filled with green Jello mix.

Next, slowly pour in 1 cup ginger beer. If you find it is fizzing too much, try pouring it down the side of the bowl instead of into the middle.

Finally, add ½ cup of vodka.

Stir just to combine the flavors. You don’t want to mix too much at this point or the ginger beer will lose its fizz.

  • 3 | Chill

Several plastic Jello shot cups filled with bright green Moscow Mule Jello shots are arranged on a white surface, with bottles and a towel in the background.

Fill each small shot cup until it is about two-thirds of the way to the top.

    Then put on the lids

Place the cups in your refrigerator and let them chill for 2 to 4 hours, or until they feel firm when you wiggle them.

    Pro tip:

To prevent condensation from forming under the lids, wait until the liquid has cooled completely before putting them on the Jello shot cups.
  • 4 | Garnish

When you are ready to serve, add a small sprig of fresh mint and a thin lime wedge to the top of each cup for a fancy finishing touch.

Wait to add the mint and lime until just before you serve them so everything stays looking fresh and vibrant.

To make Jello shots easier to eat, I like to serve them with a mini tasting spoon*. That way there’s no slurping required!

How to make ahead

A hand holds a small Jello shot cup filled with a Moscow Mule Jello shot and garnished with a lime wedge and mint; several more shots are on a white surface surrounded by lime slices and mint leaves.

Jello shots can be made up to 3 days in advance. (Technically, you could make them even further ahead of time, but they start to lose their flavor and consistency after a while).

Just keep them in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.

Then add the garnish before you start handing them out.
