Why I love this hot crab dip recipe

I’ve always liked having a warm appetizer on the table when people come over.

And this hot crab dip with cream cheese is one I keep coming back to because it’s rich, creamy, and full of crab flavor. But also incredibly easy to make.

A little Old Bay, cheddar cheese, and hot sauce give it plenty of flavor without overpowering the crab.

Since it only takes a few minutes to stir everything together before it goes into the oven, it’s a great recipe for entertaining.

It’s one of those appetizers that feels a little more special than the usual cheese dip, but doesn’t require any extra effort.

hot crab dip with cream cheese ingredients

Here is your shopping list (for 8 servings):

  • Canned goods – 6-ounce can crab meat
  • Dairy – 8 ounces cream cheese, ¼ cup sour cream, 2 ounces cheddar cheese.
  • Condiments – ¼ cup mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon hot sauce.
  • Spices – 1 teaspoon old bay seasoning, 1 teaspoon paprika.
  • Fresh produce – 1 clove garlic, 1 green onion.

Pro tip: Don’t use pre-grated cheddar cheese for this. It contains additives which keep it from sticking and can affect the texture of your dip.

Substitutions & Additions

  • If you don’t have Old Bay seasoning, you can make a simplified version by combining 2 Tablespoons celery salt, 1 Tablespoon paprika and ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper.
