These bloody knife Halloween cupcakes are super simple to make and would be a great scary dessert for your slaughter house Halloween party or murder mystery dinner.
If you’re like me, you see all kinds of beautiful Halloween cupcakes on Pinterest and know that you have no chance of successfully making any of them.
Which is why I like to come up with really easy alternatives (like my graveyard Halloween cupcakes and these devilish cupcakes) that still look good but are perfect for those of us who aren’t great bakers.
And that’s where these bloody knife cupcakes came from, too.
Having said that, here’s the original inspiration for these cupcakes…this awesome cake from sayitwithcake.org (site no longer available).
I knew there was no way I was going to get red icing that would look like blood dripping down the side of the cake and actually stay like that. But I love the idea of this cake for Halloween, so I came up with my super simple version.
And since they are easier to serve, I decided to go with cupcakes instead of making a cake.

- Red velvet cupcakes: Part of the appeal of this cake is that the inside is red, too. So I made the cupcakes using my favorite red velvet cake recipe, but you could also use a store bought red velvet cake mix if you prefer.
- Icing: I mixed up some cream cheese icing to go with it. You can use the store-bought kind if you want, but this recipe is really easy and tastes great so I actually prefer to make it myself. Cream cheese icing does start to melt if the cupcakes are left out for a while. So if you’re going to have the cupcakes sitting out, you might want to use buttercream icing instead.
- Strawberry or raspberry sundae sauce: For the blood.

How to make bloody knife Halloween cupcakes
To get the icing piled high on the cupcake, I made my homemade version of a piping bag using a ziploc bag. To do this:
- cut off one of the bottom corners of the ziploc bag
- fill it up with icing and zip the bag closed
- squeeze the icing out through the hole while moving your hand in a circular motion over the cupcake. I find that starting on the outside edge and moving in works the best.
Of course, if you have a proper piping bag, that works, too 🙂
To get the “blood”, drizzle a little bit of strawberry or raspberry sundae sauce over the top.
Be careful not to pour too much on or it will drown the cupcake.
Finally, stick a candy knife* in the top of the cupcake and you’re done!

Bloody Knife Halloween Cupcakes
- 1 box Red Velvet cake mix or you can use our favorite Red Velvet Cake recipe if you prefer
- 1 package Cream cheese frosting You can use the store-bought kind or make it yourself with our Best Cream Cheese Icing recipe – this is one case where I actually prefer to make it myself…this recipe is easy and tastes great!
- 1 jar Strawberry or raspberry sauce the kind you put on ice cream…you want it to be pureed with no fruit lumps
- 1 package Candy knives
Pots and Utensils
- 1 12-cup Muffin/cupcake tins
- 12 Muffin cups
- 1 ziploc bag with a hole cut in one corner or Piping bag
- Line the cupcake tins with the muffin cups.
- Mix the cake batter as directed on the package (or make our favorite red velvet cake recipe if you are so inclined)
- Equally divide the batter into the muffin tins.
- Follow the instructions on the package for baking the cupcakes (usually about 15 minutes).
- Let cool completely on a cake rack.
- Use store-bought cream cheese icing, or make our favorite cream cheese icing recipe.
- Cut one of the corners off of a ziploc bag (or you can use a piping bag if you have one)
- Fill the bag with frosting and seal the open end shut…to do this with a piping bag, twist the end a couple of times. For the ziploc bag, just zip it shut.
- Pipe the frosting on to the tops of the cupcakes. Start at the outside edge of the cupcake and go around in circles toward the middle until you have covered it (kind of like you would if you were serving a soft ice cream cone)
Adding the Blood
- Drizzle the strawberry or raspberry sauce over the top of each of the cupcakes. Be careful on how much you add…if you put on too much it will make a big mess of your cupcakes!
- Stick in the candy knives for the final touch!
