Halloween Ghost Strawberries

By: Wanda Simone | Updated: Sep 5, 2026

White chocolate-covered strawberries are always a treat, and turning them into ghosts makes them even more fun for Halloween. The fresh berries are a nice addition to a dessert table filled with cookies, cupcakes and candy, without feeling like the healthy option no one really wants.

Why I love this ghost strawberries recipe

I always like having a few desserts on a Halloween party table that are obviously part of the theme.

And these ghost strawberries are an easy way to do that.

The white chocolate coating and little ghost faces are especially cute for a haunted house party, but they work with just about any Halloween theme.

They’re also easy to serve and eat, which is always a plus for party food.

And since the strawberries can be made ahead of time, you can get them onto the dessert table before guests arrive.

Just a fun way to carry the Halloween theme through to the food without making the party menu more complicated than it needs to be.

Here is your shopping list (for 20 strawberries):

  • Chocolate – 12 ounces white chocolate or candy melts
  • Candy – ¼ cup black candy melts
  • Fresh produce – 2 pounds strawberries
  • Oil – ½ teaspoon coconut oil

How to make ghost strawberries

  • 1 | Prep work

Wash and thoroughly dry the strawberries.

Make sure the strawberries are completely dry before dipping.

Water can cause melted chocolate to seize, which will keep the coating from adhering smoothly.

  • 2 | Melt the white chocolate

Melted white chocolate in a bowl

Place the white chocolate or candy melts in a medium microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each interval, until the coating is completely melted and smooth.

Stop heating as soon as the last pieces melt so the chocolate does not burn.

Stir in the coconut oil to help keep the coating fluid while you dip the strawberries.

  • 3 | Dip the strawberries

Hold a strawberry by the leafy top and carefully dip it into the melted white chocolate, coating the berry while leaving the leaves uncovered.

Let excess coating drip back into the bowl, then place the strawberry on the parchment paper.

It’s okay if some of the coating runs off onto the parchment paper. It makes a better “ghost” shape.

Repeat with all of the strawberries.

  • 4 | Decorate the strawberries

Melted black candy coating in a small bowl

Place the black candy melts in a small microwave-safe bowl and melt them in the microwave until smooth.

Use short intervals and stir between each one, similar to the white candy melts.

close up of a ghost strawberry

Dip the end of a toothpick into the melted candy and use it to add two eyes and a mouth to each strawberry.

You can also use a piping bag with a very small opening (or a ziploc bag with one of the corners cut off).

But I find a toothpick is easier when working with such a small amount of candy melts.

Leave the decorated strawberries on the parchment for about 10 minutes, or until the coating and piped faces are firm to the touch.

Avoid moving them before the coating sets so the bottoms and decorations stay intact.

How to make ahead

The ghost strawberries can be made up to 1 day in advance and refrigerated until ready to serve.

I don’t like to make them much further ahead of time than this because the strawberries start to lose their freshness.

Servings: 20 strawberries
Prep 10 minutes
Setting time 10 minutes
Total 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces white chocolate or candy melts
  • ½ teaspoon coconut oil
  • 2 pounds strawberries washed and dried
  • ¼ cup black candy melts

Equipment

  • medium microwave-safe bowl
  • sheet of parchment paper, placed on the work surface
  • small microwave-safe bowl
  • toothpicks

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, melt the white chocolate in the microwave in 30 second intervals until chips are melted and smooth. Stir well between each interval.
12 ounces white chocolate or candy melts
  • Stir in the coconut oil.
    ½ teaspoon coconut oil
  • Dip the strawberries in the melted white chocolate and place on a sheet of parchment paper to rest. Repeat with all of the strawberries.
    2 pounds strawberries
  • In a small bowl, melt the black candy melts using the same interval method as the white chocolate.
    ¼ cup black candy melts
  • Use a toothpick to add two eyes and a mouth to each strawberry.
  • Allow to rest for about 10 minutes, or until the chocolate hardens.

Notes

  • Make sure the strawberries are completely dry before coating them with the white chocolate. Water can cause the chocolate to seize.
  • Coconut oil helps to keep the white chocolate from hardening as fast, which makes it easier to work with.
  • If it does get to stiff to dip the strawberries in, just microwave it to melt it again.
  • You can use a piping bag (with a very small round tip) to put on the face instead of the toothpicks if you prefer.
