This easy seven-layer dip is always a crowd favorite for game days, potlucks, and parties. With creamy layers, fresh toppings, and plenty of cheese, it’s a make-ahead appetizer that’s ready in minutes and disappears just as quickly.

Why I love this 7-layer dip recipe

Whenever I need an appetizer that’s guaranteed to be a hit, this seven-layer dip is one of the recipes I turn to.

It’s easy to make ahead, takes just a few minutes to assemble, doesn’t require any cooking and is always one of the first things to disappear at any party.

Whether you’re planning a game day menu, hosting a backyard barbecue, or just getting together with friends, this classic dip is an easy way to feed a crowd without spending a lot of time in the kitchen.

Here is your shopping list (for 12 servings):

  • Canned goods – 16-ounce can refried beans, 3-ounce can black olives.
  • Dairy – 8-ounce container sour cream, 8 ounces grated Mexican cheese blend.
  • Condiments – 8-ounce container Guacamole. You can also make our homemade Guacamole if you prefer.
  • Seasoning – 1-ounce packet taco seasoning mix
  • Fresh produce – 3 to 4 Roma tomatoes, 2 to 3 green onions.

Substitutions & Additions

  • You can use cream cheese instead of the sour cream if desired. To make it easier to mix and spread, you will need to take it out of the refrigerator a couple of hours in advance so it has time to soften up.
  • Substitute salsa or pico de gallo for the tomatoes if you prefer.
  • Add a layer of sliced jalapeños for extra kick.

How to make 7-layer dip

  • 1 | Prep work

    Dice the Roma tomatoes.

    Chop the green onions.

    Drain and chop the black olives.

  • 2 | Mix the sour cream

    In a small bowl, stir the sour cream and taco seasoning together until the color looks uniform throughout.

  • 3 | Assemble the layers

    Spread the refried beans evenly across the bottom of your serving dish so they reach all the way to the edges.

    To make spreading easier, use the back of a large spoon to smooth the beans across the bottom of your dish.

    Add spoonfuls of your sour cream mixture on top of the beans. Then carefully smooth it out until it covers the bean layer completely.

    Add your guacamole as the next layer and spread it out to cover the sour cream.

    Scatter your shredded cheese over the top of the guacamole, making sure you have an even blanket of cheese across the entire surface.

    Then add a layer of the chopped tomatoes over the cheese.

    Finish your creation by scattering the sliced green onions, and olives over the tomatoes.

  • 4 | Chill

    Place your dip in the refrigerator for at least an hour to let the flavors settle before you serve it to your guests.

    Covering the dish with plastic wrap while it chills will keep your ingredients fresh and prevent the top layer from drying out.

    Serve with tortillas and enjoy!

Storage

Keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Because of the fresh ingredients like tomatoes and guacamole, it tastes best when eaten quickly!

Ingredients
  

  • 8-ounce container sour cream
  • 1-ounce packet packet taco seasoning mix
  • 16-ounce can refried beans
  • 8-ounce container Guacamole
  • 8 ounces shredded Mexican cheese blend
  • 3 to 4 Roma tomatoes diced
  • 2 to 3 green onions chopped
  • 3-ounce can can black olives drained and chopped

Equipment

  • cutting board
  • knife
  • Small bowl
  • spoon
  • medium baking dish or platter

Instructions
 

  • Mix the sour cream and taco seasoning together in a small bowl.
    8-ounce container sour cream, 1-ounce packet packet taco seasoning mix
  • Layer the refried beans on the bottom of the dish and spread out to the edges using the back of a large spoon.
    16-ounce can refried beans
  • Drop spoonfuls of the sour cream taco seasoning onto the refried beans and spread to the edges.
  • Next spread the guacamole over the sour cream layer.
    8-ounce container Guacamole
  • Sprinkle the cheese over the top in an even layer.
    8 ounces shredded Mexican cheese blend
  • Top with tomatoes, green onions and olives.
    3 to 4 Roma tomatoes, 2 to 3 green onions, 3-ounce can can black olives
  • Chill until ready to serve.

Notes

Substitutions and additions
  • You can substitute softened cream cheese for the sour cream if you prefer.
  • Replace the tomatoes with salsa or pico de gallo if desired.
  • Add sliced Jalapeño peppers for an added kick.
