Why I love this Christmas tree pull apart garlic bread

Whenever I need an appetizer that looks Christmas-y and tastes amazing, this cheesy garlic pull-apart Christmas tree bread is my go-to recipe.

Since the recipe uses store-bought biscuit dough, these rolls are so easy to make and they turn out perfectly every time. Which is always a bonus when you’re hosting a holiday dinner.

Even the Christmas tree shape is super easy to put together.

Plus the garlicky, cheesy bites are always a hit with guests. (Who doesn’t love garlic and cheese on bread?)

So it’s a good thing this recipe makes a bunch of them, because everyone comes back for seconds.

Christmas tree pull apart bread ingredients - refrigerated biscuits, butter, mozzarella sticks, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, shredded partmesan

Here is your shopping list (for 32 pull apart rolls):

  • Bread – 2 packages (16.3 ounce – 8 count) refrigerated biscuits. I like to use Pillsbury Grands Southern Homestyle Buttermilk Biscuits from the refrigerator section in the store.
  • Dairy – 8 sticks of mozzarella string cheese, ¼ cup butter, ¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese.
  • Spices – 1 teaspoon garlic powder, ½ Tablespoon Italian seasoning

Substitutions & Additions

  • refrigerated pizza dough or crescent roll dough can be used instead of the biscuit dough, if desired.
  • I don’t recommended substituting regular mozzarella cheese for the string cheese, because it doesn’t hold together as well after it has melted.

How to make Christmas tree pull apart bread

  • 1 | Prep work

Start by preheating your oven to 350℉. This ensures the oven reaches the right temperature by the time you’re ready to bake, which is crucial for even cooking.

Prepare a large baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper. This helps prevent the rolls from sticking and makes cleanup so much easier.

Make sure your baking sheet is at least 10″ x 15″ so the entire Christmas tree shape will fit on the pan.

    Mozzarella sticks cut into quarters

Then, cut your mozzarella sticks into quarters, aiming for pieces about 1 inch thick. We’ll be putting them inside the biscuits so you don’t want them to be too big.

  • 2 | Make the rolls

a biscuit cut in half on a cutting board

Open the cans of biscuits and separate them.

    Cut each biscuit in half.

half a biscuit rolled into a ball on a cutting board with other biscuits

Roll the halves into a ball and then flatten each piece into a circle with your fingers or the palm of your hand.

A piece of mozzarella on a circle of biscuit dough

Place a piece of mozzarella in the center of each flattened biscuit.

biscuit dough rolled into a ball with mozzarella in the middle

To form the rolls, carefully fold the edges of the dough up and around the cheese, pinching the edges together to seal.

Once sealed, roll each piece gently between your hands to form a smooth ball.

  • 3 | Create the tree

Uncooked rolls on a baking sheet arranged to look like a Christmas tree

Arrange these dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, laying them out in the shape of a Christmas tree.

Start with a single ball at the top, and create the outline of the tree by laying the rolls out in a triangle shape. I like to add a bit of a flare at the bottom so it looks a little more natural.

Then fill in the middle of the tree with more rolls.

You want them to be touching or fairly close together so that when they spread during baking they will join together. But not too squished, which will make them hard to pull apart.

Finally place the last 2 rolls under the tree to create the trunk.

  • 4 | Make the garlic butter

melted butter, shredded parmesan, garlic powder and Italian seasoning in a bowl

Now we’ll make the garlic butter to spread on top of the rolls.

Start by melting ¼ cup butter in a small saucepan over low heat or in a microwave-proof bowl in the microwave for 30 to 45 seconds. (I usually use medium power to prevent it from getting too hot or burning.)

Once melted, mix it in a bowl with ¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese, ½ Tablespoon Italian seasoning and 1 teaspoon garlic powder.

garlic butter being brushed onto cheesy pull apart bread with a pastry brush

Use a pastry brush to generously brush the garlic butter over the tops and sides of the rolls.

This will not only add flavor but also helps the rolls achieve a beautiful golden color when they are baked.

  • 5 | Bake

Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 18 to 23 minutes.

Keep an eye on the rolls towards the end of the baking time. They should be golden brown on the outside and fully cooked through.

If you’re unsure, you can pull one roll apart to check if the dough inside is cooked.

Once done, let them cool slightly before serving to allow the cheese to set a bit.

But don’t let them sit too long. These rolls are at their best when served soon after baking.

Serving suggestions

If you want to transfer the pull apart rolls to a pretty serving plate, lift up the entire Christmas Tree by the parchment paper it was baked on. Then, carefully slide it off onto the platter with a spatula.

Although these taste awesome on their own, you can also serve with a small bowl of warm marinara sauce for dipping if desired.

How to make ahead

To make this pull apart bread ahead of time, put the rolls together as directed up until the baking step.

Cover and store the un-baked rolls in the refrigerator until just before serving time.

Then pop them in the oven and eat while hot.

If you are taking them to a Christmas party, ask the host if you can bake them after you get there. They taste best when served straight out of the oven.

Storage

These rolls taste best when served immediately after baking. So I don’t recommend trying to store them.
